Air Filter Maintenance

The engines in our cars, trucks, SUV’s and minivans have many moving parts. As these parts move against one another, they create friction, which in turn generates heat. Excess friction and heat are enemies to our engines since they reduce power, can cause parts to distort, seize, or even stop working altogether. And when engine oil breaks down, it becomes less effective at lubricating the engine and absorbing heat. Simply stated, motor oil provides a layer of protection between the engine’s moving parts and helps keep them from wearing out.

Motor oil also has cleaning properties. Dirt created by the combustion process can build up on the inside of an engine and this can become a major problem if left unattended. Oil is designed to trap dirt and move it away from the inner workings of your engine, as well as protect the motor from corrosion caused by condensation. Without the cleaning action that new oil provides, dirt and condensation will build up and could turn the oil into sludge, thus damaging your car’s engine.

This is why changing the oil in our vehicles on a regular basis is one the most important preventative maintenance procedures we perform. Our goal, in this respect, is to change the oil before it breaks down and causes problems. Which begs the question: How often should we change the oil?

The answer to this question depends on a number of factors including the type of oil used (conventional or synthetic), the way we drive (high speeds or, conversely, frequent stops), where we live (hot, cold or dusty climates), and the age of our vehicle. Many technicians suggest changing the oil every 3,000 miles. Some automobile companies have longer recommended intervals, like 5,000 -10,000 miles. And even one oil manufacturer – Mobil – touts that one of their oils only needs to be changed once a year! For most of us, however, a synthetic oil change every 5,000 miles is probably sufficient.

Finally, we recommend changing the oil filter every time. It’s cheap insurance and will help keep the new oil cleaner, longer. As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to call Coho Auto.
